Why Heltzel

I am running for Prosecuting Attorney in Mercer County because our community deserves a prosecutor’s office that is tough on crime, fair in the application of the law, and relentless in pursuing the timely administration of justice.

For nearly a decade, I have dedicated my career to prosecuting criminal cases, handling thousands of misdemeanors and felonies and taking on some of the most serious offenses in our county. I know firsthand that justice delayed is justice denied. Delays hurt victims as they frustrate law enforcement, erode public trust, and cost taxpayers real money.

My campaign is built on one central promise: fairness, efficiency, and accountability.

I will ensure the Prosecutor’s Office is doing everything possible to move cases swiftly from arrest, to indictment, to trial. I have plans to revamp office operations so that cases are prepared for indictment faster and are trial-ready immediately. That means fewer continuances, fewer unnecessary delays, and a system that works as it should.

Being tough on crime and being fair are not opposing ideas; they are complementary principles. I believe in holding defendants fully accountable for their actions while upholding the Constitution and maintaining the highest standards of integrity. Dangerous and predatory individuals must be removed from our streets to protect our families and especially our children. At the same time, every case must be managed ethically, responsibly, and in strict adherence to the law.

Efficiency is not just about justice—it is also about fiscal responsibility. The county’s jail bill is set to increase significantly and could cost half a million dollars more than we are paying now. Mercer County taxpayers are responsible for the cost of pre-conviction incarceration. When cases are delayed, those costs grow. By removing undue delays and expediting prosecutions, we can significantly reduce the costs associated with defendants spending time in jail before conviction—saving county tax dollars.

Once a defendant is convicted, the cost of incarceration shifts to the state. That means faster case resolution not only delivers justice more efficiently but also protects local taxpayers from unnecessary expense. The money we save can be used to lower the tax burden or reinvested into advancing Mercer County—supporting infrastructure, schools, public safety, and economic growth.

This is about more than budgets. It is about protecting our community, restoring confidence in our justice system, and making government work smarter and more effectively.

I am committed to building a Prosecutor’s Office that is proactive, organized, and trial focused. An office that supports law enforcement. An office that respects victims. An office that holds criminals accountable. And an office that operates with fairness, professionalism, and integrity every single day.
